Cantina Peppucci's story began in the late 1980's, when Piero Peppucci and Luisa Giontella moved to the small town of Todi in Umbria to raise their children and get in touch with nature. They converted a 13th century Benedictine monastery and by 2000, the couple had acquired the surrounding lands. Thirteen of the estate's 45 hectares are planted to vine. Native varietals Sangiovese, Sagrantino, Colorino and Grechetto, as well as international varietals Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, are grown in the calcareous clay, sand and stony soils. In 2010, a new winery was constructed to improve the estate's already fantastic wines.
Peppucci's Petroro 4 — an 80/20 blend of Sangiovese and Merlot — is crafted from 30 year old vines, spontaneously fermented in cement, then bottled without fining or filtration. This rosso sits a bright ruby in the glass offering dazzling aromas of ripe cherries, raspberries and dried violets. The medium-bodied palate is fresh and inviting with lush, red berry fruits elevated by a vibrant acidity and supported by mild tannins. The lengthy finish is delightfully refreshing. Enjoy with cured meats and cheese, light pasta dishes or Umbrian porchetta.
