Maurizio Anfosso and Roberta Repaci farm 7 of the 81 total hectares that make up the Rossese di Dolceacqua DOC along the Italian coast in Liguria. Their vineyards were planted in 1872 on their own rootstock on steeply terraced vineyards of marly schist soils at about 400 meters elevation. The Galeae vineyard, a breathtaking natural amphitheater, was replanted by Maurizio in 1999: he used massal selection to replicate the ancient Beragna vineyard. Maurizio’s devotion to the Rossese makes him an expert on the obscure grape. He is also an artist who draws abstract portraits of his family members on each of his fermentation tanks. These wines are a rare treasure, and Rossese itself is increasingly recognized as a culinary revelation for food pairings.
The Ka Manciné Galeae is made from 100% Rossese from the Galeae vineyard on steep terraces of schist with calcareous marls and clay, shallow soil. All grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts, 85% destemmed and 15% whole-cluster, in stainless steel tanks, then aged for 9 months in tank. Light ruby in color with aromas of fresh cut flowers, ripe red fruits alongside a hint of spice. The palate is soft and energetic with lively fruit concentration and a complex savory undertone that flows into a balanced and persistent finish. Enjoy with turbot, grilled vegetables or mushroom dishes.
