In 1987, Andreas Kyriakides established Vouni Panayia, the first private regional winery in Cyprus. Today, the estate is still family run. The 25 hectares of vineyards are located 1,000 meters above sea level, surrounded by a pine forest under the Troodos mountains. Andreas planted the indigenous white varietals Xynisteri, Promara, Spourtiko and Morokanela, as well as the red grapes Maratheftiko, Yiannoudi and Ntopio Mavro. All vines are planted on their original rootstocks, since phylloxera has not reached this high-altitude mountain vineyard. The soils are mostly clay with a gypsum-clay structural composition.
Vouni Panayia's Alina is 100% Xynisteri from 70-year old bush vines. Xynisteri is the most planted white varietal on Cyprus, producing wines with great fruit and floral flavors, refreshing acidity and minerality. Alina delivers clean and precise aromas of pineapple, peach and beeswax. The palate is medium-bodied with exotic fruits driving the flavors as the morph into a lively citrus-tinged finish with a touch of honey.
