"Respect for the land is the only way to obtain a great wine." This is the motto of the Terzuoli Family, proprietors of Società Agricola Sasso di Sole.
Sasso di Sole — which translates to "stone of the sun" — is a 110-hectare estate located within the UNESCO park of Val d'Orcia in the northeastern part of Montalcino. The property has been under the care of the Terzuoli family since the 17th century and their focus has always been agriculture. Yet, it wasn't until the 1970's that the family began bottling their own wines. Today, Roberto Terzuoli heads the estate, organically farming his ten hectares of vineyards with scrupulous attention to detail. The aforementioned "respect for the land" coupled with technological innovation and a strong link to tradition is the family's secret to producing quality wines, always looking to the future without forgetting the past. Sasso di Sole's vineyards are at altitudes of 280 to 320 meters with south/southwest exposure on medium-textured soil of Pliocene origin, dotted with an assortment of small surface stones. All grapes are hand-harvested and manually sorted at the winery before fermentation with indigenous yeasts followed by at least 20 days of skin contact and aging in large 35 and 50 hectoliter Slavonian oak casks.
Sasso di Sole's Rosso di Montalcino is a bright, easy-drinking 100% Sangiovese aged for four months in stainless steel, then nine months in Slavonian botti. This Rosso pours an intriguing mid-ruby red offering captivating aromas of fresh red berry and stone fruits accented with notes of rose petals and a touch of spice. The attack is soft and juicy, packed with ripe fruit flavor — cherries, strawberries, and raspberries. On the mid-palate, these fruits are framed by a piquant acidity and firm, persistent tannins that support this delicious wine to an incredibly satisfying finish that keeps calling you back for another sip! Sasso di Sole's Rosso di Montalcino is a chameleon on the dinner table... a great way to start a meal paired alongside creamy cheeses and cured meats... the perfect pasta or pizza wine... but also has the structure to stand up to an expertly-grilled ribeye.
