Domaine Magellan Pézenas - Rouge 2019
Winemaking has always been in Bruno Lafon's DNA, having grown up at the legendary Domaine des Comtes Lafon. The world was able to see his star shine when he and his brother, Dominique, took the reins of the estate in 1984. Though seeking a change, he moved his family to Magalas in the Languedoc in 1998, after purchasing the property he'd fallen in love with on vacation. The combination of proximity to the Mediterranean, elevation, soils and some of the oldest vines in the region had Bruno eager to showcase the land's potential, so he immediately set to rehabilitating the estate.
Today, Bruno uses his four decades of winemaking and viticultural experience to produce some of the finest wines in all of France. He organically farms (certified since 2010) 25 hectares planted to Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne on shale, sandstone soils. Harvests are completed manually, sorting is conducted in the vineyard and fermentation is performed with native yeasts. New oak is never used.
Magellan's Pézenas rouge is a gorgeous blend of Syrah and Grenache. Deep ruby red in the glass, this red exhibits an entrancing bouquet of dark, brambly fruits accented with notes of leather and tobacco. The palate is full of ripe berry flavors (black raspberry, currants, blackberry) with a wonderful combination of savory and mineral secondary notes. The tannins are well-structured and balanced by a subtle acidity. The finish is long, rich and powerful. Perfect with game meats... try with braised pheasant with parsnips and sweet potatoes or roast wild boar with carrots and fennel.
