Description

Weingut Lackner-Tinnacher is nestled among vineyards, orchards and forests on a picturesque chain of hills in Steinbach near the municipality of Gamlitz in Austria's Südsteiermark. One of the region's oldest family-owned wineries, the estate traces its history back to 1770, with four of its vineyard sites documented in incredible detail in the Josephine land register of 1778. Today, Katharina Tinnacher represents the latest generation to steward the property, combining more than 250 years of family tradition with a thoughtful, modern approach to viticulture.

Katharina and her family organically farm 27 hectares of estate-owned vineyards planted on the steep slopes of Southern Styria at elevations of 400-500 meters. Surrounded by meadows, orchards and woodland that encourage biodiversity and create a naturally balanced ecosystem, the vineyards are cultivated entirely by hand with a philosophy that great wine is born in the vineyard rather than the cellar. Lackner-Tinnacher grows the varieties best suited to this cool-climate region — Sauvignon Blanc, Gelber Muskateller, Welschriesling, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Morillon (the local name for Chardonnay) and Pinot Gris — crafting wines that capture the precision, elegance and distinctive mineral character of Styria's remarkable terroir.

Brilliant pale gold with green reflections, the 2022 Morillon opens with lifted aromas of lemon zest, white peach, crisp pear and Mirabelle plum, layered with delicate notes of white flowers, crushed stone and a subtle hint of hazelnut from aging on its lees. The palate is taut and energetic, combining vibrant citrus and orchard fruit with a striking mineral backbone that carries through the wine from start to finish. While unmistakably Chardonnay, its cool-climate origins give it a remarkably linear profile, driven by precision and freshness rather than richness. Bright acidity lends exceptional lift, culminating in a long, saline finish that leaves a lasting impression of purity and elegance. Its vibrant acidity and mineral character make this Morillon an exceptionally versatile food wine. Excellent with a myriad of seafood: oysters, sushi and sashimi, grilled shrimp, seared sea scallops, pan-roasted halibut, trout with lemon and herbs, the list is endless! However, you can also enjoy this white with fresh goat and alpine cheeses, asparagus risotto, roast chicken or veal schnitzel.
