Fonseca was founded in 1815, and has cemented itself as one of the top Port houses in operation today. Their Vintage Ports are legendary for their richness, complexity, and ability to age. The house has always had a strong connection with the vineyards, and were actually one of the first to utilize organic and sustainable viticulture in its vineyards. The Vintage Ports are made from grapes grown on their own quintas (estates): Cruzeiro, Santo Antonio and Panascal, all of which make their own style of Vintage Port that adds to the final wine.
Intense black inky core with thin purple rim. The nose opens up into a dense mass of blackberries and currants. Compact and concentrated, it exhibits great purity - a characteristic of the 2011 vintage. The nose gradually opens up revealing a matrix of intoxicating herbal aromas, discrete notes of exotic wood, marzipan and plum, as well as an attractive graphite minerality. Solid, with well-integrated tannins that give volume and firmness in the mouth, with reserves of dense dark fruit and full of dark chocolate and licorice. It is a vigorous vintage full of fruit, as is the tradition of Fonseca Vintages.
