Viñas Viejas de Pegaso is the project of Telmo Rodriguez and Pablo Eguzkiza in the Sierra de Gredos west of Madrid. As a youth, Telmo would hike throughout Spain with his father, searching out old, forgotten vineyards, particularly along the Cañada Reales. Cebreros, a village and now appellation within the Sierra de Gredos, was one of those forgotten regions he discovered, and in 1999 Telmo began to make wine under the name Pegaso, a tribute to the famous Spanish car and truck manufacturer of the 1940s. Today, Marc Isart makes the wines from old-vine, bush-trained organic Garnacha in soils of brown slate and granite from historic vineyards in Sierra de Gredos.
Zeta is Pegaso’s Cebreros village wine, produced from over 60-year-old, organically-farmed, bush-trained Garnacha vines fermented with native yeasts and aged for six months in 500 liter French oak barrels and six months in steel. Intensely aromatic, this 100% Garnacha offers an abundance of stone fruit on the nose tinged with dusty rose petals and spice. The juicy palate is awash with a mix of wild and black cherries accented with a hint of baking spice. Those beautiful fruit flavors are supported by suave tannins that carry the wine towards a persistent, mineral-driven finish. Pair with hard, aged cheeses, homemade pizza with sausage or pepperoni and most roasted or grilled meats or game.
