The Škegro Family Winery is led by Bariša Skegro, who takes a modern approach to the traditional: love and care for vineyards, hands-off winemaking, and a strong desire to simply offer the spirit of Herzegovina through their wines. The Skegro family estate is comprised of two south-facing, terraced vineyards — mostly planted in 2005 — consisting of Žilavka, Blatina, and other indigenous varietals, in the small village of Radišići, in the southwestern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina.Their soils are rich with calcareous marl, sandstone and flint and with Mostar being within an hour from the Croatian coastline, the climate has a Mediterranean influence with extreme hot summers and mild winters. Farming is all organic, utilizing natural cover crops, manure and organic fertilizer — when needed — along with copper and sulfur. They do not use herbicides or pesticides. As the vines continue to mature, they are on their way to organic certification. All harvesting is done manually.
This wine is an incredible introduction to the Blatina grape and the red wines of Herzegovina. It pours a deep, dark ruby red into the glass releasing enticing aromatics of ripe berries mixed with notes of violets, spice and savory herbs. The palate is packed with juicy fruit flavors of plum and black raspberry and a touch of earth. This is an elegant wine with a firm, yet agreeable tannic structure that supports this lovely red to a long finish. Perfect for red meats and wild game, but equally delightful with cured meats and semi-soft cheeses.
