Description

Domaine Theulot-Juillot was originally established in 1930 by Emile Juillot and his wife Marguerite. The couple’s aptitude for recognizing choice parcels was on full display when the six hectares of vineyards they purchased to found their estate were classified as Premier Cru after the Mercurey AOC was created in 1936. The then-named, Domaine Juillot was one of the first estates in Mercurey to bottle and sell their own wines following WWII. In 1987, Marguerite handed over the reins to the property to her granddaughter Natalie in a rare woman-to-woman exchange. Today, third-generation winemaker Natalie Theulot and her husband Jean-Claude, a four-decades long winegrower, organically farm their now twelve-hectare estate, utilizing low-yield viticulture and manual tending and harvesting, to craft exquisite and textbook Mercurey wines.

The Theulot-Juillot Mercurey Vignes Vieilles is sourced from three lieux-dits (Les Montelons, Le Clos Laurent, Les Vaux) with an average vine age of 50 years. This old-vine Pinot Noir presents a bright ruby red color in the glass, offering a dazzling interplay of tart berry fruits intertwined with hints of potpourri, licorice and spice. The medium-bodied palate showcases lovely, spice-dusted cranberries and cherries buttressed by a vibrant acidity, soft tannins and a finely-crushed rock minerality. This wine’s depth and structure is on full display the moment it touches your lips to its lively and focused finish. Coq au vin or Magret de canard would be classic pairings for this beautiful Burgundy, though you will not be disappointed with serving this wine with a lamb kefta tagine.
