In 1894, Ferdinand Charleux founded what would eventually become Domaine Maurice Charleux & Fils in Dezize-les-Maranges southwest of Santenay, at the southern border of the Côte d'Or in Burgundy. In 1970, Maurice took over the vineyards and began selling wine under his own name, eventually handing the reins to his son Vincent who currently is in charge. Today, the domaine covers just under 10 hectares of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines that are farmed sustainably, producing less than a miniscule 3,500 cases per year.
Clos Rousseau is a 0.51-hectare Premier Cru vineyard in Santenay that is a direct continuation of Maranges' Clos Roussots. All grapes are hand harvested, destemmed and fermented with native yeasts, then aged in 20% new oak barrels, with the rest aged in a mix of 2nd and 3rd use barrels. Light ruby in color with bright red fruit aromas and flavors to complement soft tannins and an earthy complexity. Enjoy with coq au vin or beef tenderloin.
