In 1950, the Marchand family (from Morey-Saint-Denis) and Grillot family (from Gevrey-Chambertin) were joined by marriage, creating the Marchand-Grillot estate that. Today, the estate consists of 9 hectares of vines in 48 different parcels, each of which is harvested and vinified separately, run by Jacques Marchand and his children, Etienne and Marion, the six generation, who all continue to make traditional wines without compromise. Each cuvée has its own barrel regime and three coopers are employed: Tonnellerie Rousseau, Tonnellerie Hermitage, and Tonnellerie Billon. The domaine picks early, uses up to 25% stems in fermentation, which occurs with natural yeasts, and ages their wines with little new oak. The wines are approachable in youth, though age extremely well.
The La Perrière Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru is located just below the Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru. Marchand-Grillot's holdings are comprised of two parcels planted 30 and 40 years ago on extremely rocky soils. All grapes are fermented with native yeasts and aged in new and once used Tronçais oak for 18 months. This gorgeous Premier Cru is stony and well-structured with dark currant and berry flavors, muscular tannins and wonderful volume and persistence, yet still retains an elegance that is striking.
