Domaine de Rancy — nestled in the Agly Valley just north of the Pyrénées — was founded in the 1920’s. In 1970, the estate was acquired by Marcel Verdaguer, who was joined by his son Jean-Hubert four years later. Jean-Hubert and his wife Brigitte took over the property in 1989 and now oversee the 50+ year old vines planted on clay-limestone and brown schist soils. While practicing organic for decades, the estate’s first certified organic vintage was 2011. Domaine de Rancy is one of only a handful of quality wineries still producing exceptional Rivesaltes in the old Ambré style, a unique fortified wine. Today, the couple manage an extraordinary library of wines, some dating back to the 1940’s.
The 1969 vintage sits in the glass a light mahogany color revealing layers of caramel and toffee accented with roasted coffee beans and dried herbs. The palate is full-bodied, rich and incredibly textured, yet it remains fresh and delicate in the mouth offering lightness and elegance throughout. Enjoy with roasted mixed nuts, olives and hard cheeses or a variety of other hors d'oeuvres, as well as being a perfect dessert wine.
