Clivo Altura is the single most unique and exciting Sangiovese project in Tuscany today… period. The project combines extreme, high-elevation Chianti Classico sites with skilled Burgundian winemaking techniques. Throw in organic farming, low yields and a micro-total-production of 100 cases and you get something absolutely magical. Clivo Altura is the brainchild of Corzano e Paterno’s William Goldschimdt, a world-savvy, young winemaker who traveled the globe right out of school, eventually landing in Burgundy where the region became the laboratory for his dreams of reinterpreting Sangiovese in his own special way. For five years, William worked with legendary Burgundian producers: Jean-Marc Roulot… David Croix… David Duband… learning about single-vineyard expressions of wine, whole-cluster fermentation and barrique aging: techniques rarely applied in his Chianti Classico home.
La Debuttante is crafted from 100% Sangiovese sourced from two high-elevation sites in Panzano, a 55-year-old vineyard on riverbed soils full of round stones in Montefiridolfi and a 60-year-old vineyard in Vagliagli, the oldest in the village. This wine is an aromatic marvel, high-toned and fine, a medium-bodied masterpiece. Redolent of baking spices and Morello cherries, the mid-palate is deeply concentrated on a light frame of supple tannins that finish a mile long. This incredibly elegant, refined Sangiovese will be delicious tonight and every night for the next 10-15 years.
