Château Saint-Pierre is an historic Saint-Julien estate dating back to 1693 when its land was first planted to vines and known as a farm property by the name of Serançon. During the 1855 Classification, it was ranked as a Fourth Growth. In 1767, Baron de Saint Pierre purchased the estate and renamed it after himself: Château Saint-Pierre. After the Baron's death in 1832, the estate was divided to his sons who sold off the vineyards piece by piece until less than 2.5 hectares remained in the 1920's. Since that time, pieces of the original estate have gradually been put together by the Van den Bussche company and Alfred Martin.
Today, under the Martin family's leadership, the Château has 17 hectares of vineyards planted to 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc on gravel, sand and clay soils. The estate is one of the most technologically advanced in Bordeaux: they were one of the first estates to utilize satellite imagery to judge when vineyard sections are ready to pick. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks of varying size and the wine is aged in 60% new French oak for 14-16 months.
