Description

Château Prieuré-Lichine's history started in a most unique manner: initially it was a priory for Benedictine monks. In 1951, Alexis Lichine purchased the estate and revamped and expanded the vineyards and cellar, eventually growing to 58 hectares of vines spread out over all of the Margaux appellation. In 1989, Alexis died and passed the estate on to his son, Sacha. Today, the Château is owned by the Ballande group, who have added more vineyards and updated the winery to allow for vinification on a parcel-by-parcel basis.

Château Prieuré-Lichine is ranked as a 4th Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The vineyards are planted to 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot on gravel, sand and clay based soils. The grapes are vinified in a mix of concrete and stainless steel vats of varying size and aged for 16 months in 50% new French oak barrels. The resultant wines are elegant expressions of Margaux with notes of cassis, violets and oak spice coupled with a fresh acidity and firm, sweet tannins.
