Château Poujeaux has a history that dates back to the 1600's, when it used to be owned by Gaston de l'Isle, the owner of Château Latour. Over the years, Poujeaux has had many owners, including Marquis François Etienne de Brassier, the owner of Château Beychevelle. In 2008, the Cuvelier family purchased the property and modernized the winemaking facilities and farming techniques in the vineyards, moving to organic viticulture with an eye on biodynamic farming.
The estate consists of 68 hectares in Moulis which are planted to 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot on gravel based soils. The fruit is whole-berry fermented in a mix of stainless steel vats, oak barrels and cement tanks, then aged in about 40% new French oak barrels for 12 months. The wines produced are some of the best values to be found on the left bank, and drink well young but can age exceptionally well too.
