Château Moulin Saint-Georges is one of Saint-Émilion's best kept secrets. Owned and operated by the Vauthier family of Château Ausone (one of Bordeaux's Crown Jewel estates), Moulin Saint-Georges is located next to Ausone, less than 800 feet door to door. Everything that happens at Ausone ― from the people to the work in the vineyards and the cellar ― is identical at Moulin Saint-Georges. In essence, Moulin Saint-Georges is a petit “Ausone” at an unbelievable value!
Château Moulin Saint-Georges has 7 hectares of vines, planted mostly to Merlot with small amounts of Cabernet Franc on clay-limestone soils just south of the city of Saint-Emilion. The Vauthier family have owned the estate since 1921, and today the fifth generation of the family is in charge, led by the esteemed Alain Vauthier and his daughter, Pauline. Harvest is done by hand and each plot is individually sorted, then all grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged in 100% new French oak barrels.
Château Moulin Saint-Georges is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. In the glass, the wine sits a deep ruby red color tinged with purple. The nose is full of dark red berry fruit accented with sandalwood, anise and herbs. Dense and textured on the palate, this wine displays a wonderful concentration of fruit (raspberry and damson plum) supported by firm tannins that will let this gorgeous Saint-Émilion age beautifully over the next 15+ years. Pair with flank steak served with chimichurri or grilled lamb chops.
