Description

Château Mazeyres is an historic estate in Pomerol; the site of the château was where the Roman poet Ausonius chose to build his villa, Lucaniac, thousands of years ago and vineyards have been planted since at least the 14th century. Alain Moueix and his team have farmed Mazeyres biodynamically since 2011, with organic certification in 2015, followed by biodynamic certification in 2018. Today, the estate totals 25.5 hectares of certified biodynamic vineyards on terraces by the Catusseau plateau in the southwest of Pomerol on a mix of fine clay gravel soils; clay sand and gravel soils; and sandy clay soils, each of which imbue the wine with specific characteristics that add to the final blend.

Le Seuil de Mazeyres, the second label of Château Mazeyres, is a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc aged in a mix of 30% oak barrels and 70% concrete and steel vats. In the glass, the wine shows a brilliant deep purple color with soaring aromas of blackberries, cassis, sweet spice and ripe strawberry. On the palate, the wine is soft and smooth with velvet tannins and rich, concentrated fruit flavors that flow into a powerful, refined finish. It is fascinating to see the interplay of Mazeyres' terroirs in action: elegance from the fine clay gravel soils; flesh, roundness and density from clay sand soils; power from the gravel and sandy soils. Drink now or put a few bottles away to enjoy over the next 5+ years.
