Château Magondeau is a family estate in Saillans, on the banks of the Isle River in Fronsac, with a history dating to the 1930s when Henri Goujon inherited the property through his wife. His son André took over in 1964, establishing the estate’s tradition of aging and bottling its own wines, and in 1989 the third generation, Olivier Goujon, assumed responsibility after studying viticulture and oenology. Today, the estate encompasses roughly 18 hectares of clay-limestone vineyards, with vines averaging around 35 years of age and planted entirely to Merlot. The Goujons work parcel by parcel, carefully managing pruning, canopy and crop levels to encourage healthy, fully ripened fruit, while their HVE-certified farming program emphasizes reducing chemical intervention.
The 2022 Château Magondeau opens with a generous, inviting nose of ripe red and black fruit, gradually revealing notes of violet, plum, sweet spice and a subtle mineral character. The palate is supple and rounded, with juicy blackberry, black cherry and raspberry framed by fresh acidity and finely textured tannins. There is plenty of concentration here, but the wine remains poised and remarkably approachable, finishing with a lingering touch of dark fruit, spice and licorice. A natural match for roast beef, grilled lamb, duck confit, mushroom-rich dishes or a hearty beef stew.
