In the 17th century Arnaud Ducasse purchased land in Pauillac that was to become Château Grand Puy Ducasse. Orginally known as "Ducasse-Grand-Puy-Artigues-Arnaud", the château was classified as a Cinquième Cru, 5th Growth, in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. In 1932 the estate was renamed Château Grand-Puy Ducasse, referring to the Ducasse family roots but also the "grand puy", or gravelly hill the vineyards lie on.
The vineyards consist of 40 hectares of vines (62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot) planted on sandy, Garonne gravel in Pauillac. All grapes are hand-harvested and selected, destalked, and fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is aged in French oak barrels of which 30% to 40% are new each year.
