Cos Labory was ranked as a Cinquièmes Cru, or 5th Growth, in the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux. Located in the commune of Sainte-Estèphe, the name Cos Labory comes from the local name for hill, Cos, and François Labory, the original owner of the property. It is neighbors with the other famous Cos of Saint Estèphe, Cos d'Estournel. The estate covers 18 hectares of vineyards (it is one of the smallest Cru Classé) that are situated on top of a hill, consisting of gravel soils with exceptional drainage. The wines at Cos Labory are fermented at low temperatures to preserve and enhance the wonderful fruit flavors of the grapes, making the wines approachable when young, but also allowing them to age gracefully. The wines are matured in 50% new French oak barrels.
The Cos Labory is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, displaying a beautiful, deep ruby color, highlighting its still youthful appearance. Aromas of ripe cassis, blackberry and beautiful new French oak burst from the glass. This wine showcases its characteristics very well, delivering bold fruit, but remaining sleek with a refreshing acidity and vigorous, polished tannins. There is great depth of flavor and balance without the ripeness of the fruit dominating the wine. The finish is long and energetic highlighted with lift and finesse. This Cos Labory is drinking beautifully now, but will only get better with age, as the development of fruit and integration of stylish oak continues. Pair this wine with hearty dishes of lamb, beef or veal.
