Château Carbonnieux is an historic estate located south of the city of Bordeaux in the Pessac-Léognan appellation where it is ranked as a Grand Cru Classé de Graves. Such is its reputation that in the 18th century it was served to the Sultan of Constantinople as "mineral water from Carbonnieux" so as to not break the Islamic restriction of serving alcohol. It is well known for producing one of the top white wines in all of Bordeaux year in and year out. Although, the red wines of the estate are also among some of the best quality in the appellation; in fact, Carbonnieux is one of only six Châteaux to be classified Grand Cru for both red and white wines.
The Carbonnieux Rouge is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot, fermented in stainless steel and aged from 15-18 months in French oak barrels, 35% to 40% of which are new. Beautiful, deep purple color with an aromatic bouquet of ripe fruit tinged with a slightly sweet smoky sensation from new oak barrels. On the palate, the tannins are rich and long with a soft sheen, impeccably balanced by a complex minerality and vibrant acidity. The finish is long and powerful, suggesting a long life ahead in the cellar.
