| | Divum Chardonnay | 2019 Monterey, California 13.9% ABV | Regular Price: $20 | |
Earlier this spring, I shared with you the Divum Chardonnay from Monterey, California. I know that California Chardonnay is popular, but I was not prepared for how well received this wine would be! In retrospect, it actually isn't at all that surprising, as this wine delivers off-the-charts quality at an unbelievable price. What's even more impressive is that Divum is crafted from 100% estate fruit from a single vineyard. Finding a wine with such balance of fruit, oak, alcohol and body at a price like this from estate fruit in California is unheard of and this may be the most amazing Cali Chardonnay value on the market. For those of you who love the decadence, balance and refreshment of great California Chardonnay without the excess, Divum is a breath of fresh air. I have just receieved another shipment of the delicious 2019 vintage, so stock up today while supplies last! |
| Open Air Brothers Tom and Rob Franscioni are the fourth generation of their family to farm their 727-acre estate in Monterery, California. They learned grape farming from their father, Dan, who not only taught them the ins and outs of their vineyards, but also impressed on them the family's unofficial motto, "work hard, play hard." Tom and Rob named their estate label Divum, which means "open air" in Latin, to honor their late father and his love of the outdoors. The estate consists of two vineyards, Danny's and Grava, that are planted primarily to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Both sites are certified sustainable under the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance. The vines benefit from the cooling influence of the Monterey Canyon, which creates a large diurnal temperature difference and a long hang time for the fruit. The soils consist of decomposed granite over heavy clay loam. |
Divum The Divum Chardonnay is from the estate's Grava Vineyard, located at the foot of the Gabilan Mountain Range in the northern end of the Monterey AVA. The wine undergoes full malolactic conversion and is aged for nine months in French oak barrels, 15% of which are new. In the glass, the Divum Chardonnay shows a brilliant light gold color with lemon highlights. Aromas of fresh mango, pineapple and baked apple plume from the glass, complemented by lovely undertones of baking spice, vanilla and cream. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with gorgeous fruit intensity that is supported by flavors from French oak. The wine's lively acidity is perfectly balanced with an appealing creamy texture from the malolactic fermentation and time in barrel. Its finish dances along a taut mineral spine that drives the wine's energy, adding complexity and depth. Overall, the Divum Chardonnay does an exceptional job balancing fruit, oak and minerality, delivering a bright and intricate Chardonnay. And at a price like this, it is arguably the best value California Chard you can find! |
