Today, I am excited to share with you the new vintage of Inès Lauverjat's Vieilles Vignes de 1947 Sancerre! In a short amount of time, Inès' wines have become among our most popular Loire Valley wines in the shop!

For those who do not know, Inès is an ambitious, rising star in the Loire Valley, producing stunning Sauvignon Blanc from her tiny vineyard in Menetou-Ratel. Two years ago, I received sample bottles from an array of French producers and Inès' Sancerre was among them. While I recognized the Lauverjat family name — one of the most famous and revered in Sancerre — I was unfamiliar with Inès and her domaine. Tasting the wine stopped me in my tracks: I was amazed by its purity, expression, tension and energy. It's hard to believe there is so many complex flavors and textures in a 750 mL bottle! I was in disbelief.

I called Inès the next day and was surprised at what I learned: she was only 25 years old and 2019 was only her second vintage ever of Sancerre Blanc! What's more is that Inès had never sold her wine outside of France; in fact, she had barely sold them outside of her own cellar! As we talked, I couldn't help but think I was on the cusp of a great discovery for the Corkscrew customers: a marvelous, chiseled Sancerre that literally nobody in the USA has tasted, hand-crafted by a committed, dynamic young woman. After our conversation, I was convinced Inès is the real deal, a hidden gem in Sancerre and a producer that will be a staple of our Loire Sauvignon Blanc selection for years to come. Her wines are beyond great, and as a scion of one of Sancerre's most illustrious families, her virtues are of the highest pedigree. I'm sure Inès will become a legend, and you can experience her extraordinary wine for yourself. Here is her story...

Les Vins d'Inès
Inès Lauverjat founded her domaine in 2017 when she was only 23 years old. She comes from a family of winemakers in Sancerre, though as a teenager she didn't think the farming life was for her. However, while at business school in London, Inès interned at wine import company, where her experience sparked a change of heart. She realized that starting her own domaine would allow her to control all aspects of her business, from vine to bottle to sales, marketing and strategy. With newfound excitement, she decided to further her viticulture studies in Beaune. In 2017, she was able to purchase a tiny 2.5 hectare vineyard, Les Rossignols, in her village, Menetou-Ratel. Much of the vineyard was in shambles, so with the help of her parents, Inès replanted most of the vines while also building her own cellar. There was one 0.28 ha section of Sauvignon Blanc vines that Inès left alone: they were planted in 1947 and still produced beautiful, concentrated fruit. It is this old-vine Sauvignon Blanc that is the source of her astounding Vieilles Vignes de 1947 Sancerre.

World-Class Sancerre
Inès' Vieilles Vignes de 1947 comes from Sauvignon Blanc vines planted in 1947 on clay-limestone soils in a small vineyard in Chavignol at an altitude of 300 meters. Her winemaking is traditional: gentle pressing, temperature-controlled stainless steel fermentation and aging with lees contact for 4-5 months. In the glass, the wine displays a brilliant light-lemon color. The nose is powerfully aromatic with notes of chalk dust, grapefruit, lemon sherbet, white flowers and fresh cut herbs. On the palate, this Sancerre delivers a taut mineral core bursting at the seems with mouthwatering refreshment, fruit intensity and a chalky mineral texture. The finish is a remarkable a perfume of lime zest, flower blossoms and fresh fruits that seem to grow and bloom in the mouth. To have such remarkable quality — in only her fourth vintage! — is a testament to Inès skill, dedication and drive to create world-class Sancerre.
