Domaint Petitot is one of my favorite hidden gems in the Burgundy section of the Princeton Corkscrew. We've been working with the wines of Natalie and Hervé Petitot since the 2016 vintage, though I have never been offered a large enough allocation to feature in a newsletter. Fortunately, with the stunning 2019 vintage that has changed! Husband and wife Natalie and Hervé are obsessive farmers and conscientious winemakers who craft beautiful Pinot Noir from less glamorous appellations in the Côte d'Or like Savigny-lès-Beaune, Côte de Nuits-Villages and Ladoix. Their secret is an abundance of old vine Pinot Noir that produces richly concentrated fruit which they skillfully make into superb wines. Because Domaine Petitot don't have Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards, their wines are more readily available and deliver exceptional quality at a great value. Although I wonder for how long, since with their amazing quality it is only a matter of time until other red Burgundy lovers discover them! |
| Natalie and Hervé Petitot Domaine Petitot is the work of husband-and-wife team Natalie and Hervé Petitot. Hervé manages the vineyards and Natalie the cellar, although both are trained oenologists. The Petitot family had been farmers in Burgundy for 5 generations, however prior to vineyards, they specialized in grains. It was Hervé's parents who bottled the first estate wine in 1975, with Hervé taking over from his father in 1994. Today the estate consists of only 8 hectares of tiny parcels spread across the Côtes de Beaune and Côtes de Nuits. In the vineyard the Petitots plow frequently to eliminate the use of herbicides and in addition they employ no insecticides of any kind. Hervé and Natalie believe that a wine is a photograph of the vintage, so all their work is to allow the terroir and the quality of the vintage to come through. |
Domaine Petitot Les Pimentiers Les Pimentiers is a small, 0.17 hectare east facing vineyard at 230 meters elevation in Savigny-Les-Beaune. The Pinot Noir vines are 60 years-old, grown on red-brown limestone, clay and gravel soils. All the fruit is destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in cement tanks, then aged for 1 year in oak barrels, 15% of which are new, the rest 1-5-year-old barrels and bottled unfiltered. The wine pours a brilliant light ruby with a scarlet rim. On the nose aromas of strawberry, red currant and fresh earth explode from the glass. There is excellent concentration of ripe red fruits combined with a subtle warming spice, perfectly balanced by a broad acidity and smooth tannins to complement the well-rounded body. The finish is long and complex with lovely depth of flavor. Enjoy with grilled salmon alongside roasted beets or rack of lamb with an herb crust accompanied by sauteed mushrooms. |
