When people think about the the most prestigious indigenous red wine grapes of Italy, two immediately come to mind: Nebbiolo from Piedmont and Sangiovese from Tuscany. Some may mention Aglianico from Taurasi or Basilicata, while others, Montepulciano from Abruzzo. Yet, one grape continually gets forgotten on this list: Corvina. Corvina? Yes, Corvina! It makes the noble wines of Valpolicella in the Veneto. While it is perhaps best known as the primary grape used in making Amarone della Valpolicella (a unique wine style made from dried Corvina grapes,) the great joy of a well-made Valpolicella Classico is something that is too often overlooked. And that is a shame, because these wines are energetic, delicious and a great value! Today, I would like to reintroduce you to one of Italy's most charming wines from one of the Veneto's top producers: Viviani's Valpolicella Classico. |
| Authentic Valpolicella Claudio Viviani, along with his wife, Sandra, and his family, farm 10 hectares of vineyards in the hamlet of Mazzano in the historic Valpolicella Classico zone. Mazzano is such a highly-regarded area that the Italian food and wine publication Gambero Rosso has listed it as a Premiere Cru in a hypothetical Valpolicella classification. Here, the vineyards of Viviani sit at some of the highest elevations in the region, 345-450 meters above sea level, on soils of limestone mixed with fossilized pink coral. Claudio's main goal is to grow balanced grapes to make a balanced wine. To that end, he utilizes organic farming practices in the vineyard and eschews all synthetic treatments on his vines. All of his wines have a high degree of freshness and vibrancy to them, and are some of the most authentic wines in Valpolicella. |
Valpolicella Classico Mazzano is in the Negrar Valley, one of three main valleys that are home to the superior hillside vineyards of the Valpolicella Classico. In 1968, when the Valpolicella DOC was created, the area of production was greatly enlarged, encompassing vineyards not part of the traditional, or Classico zone. This distinction is important, as the vineyards in the Classico are planted at higher elevations on steep, hillside vineyards over calcareous soils. This terroir imparts more flavor and distinction to the wines. Viviani's 2020 Valpolicella Classico is a blend of 70% Corvina and 30% Rondinella from vines between 10-30 years old. The wine pours a beautiful ruby with garnet highlights. Enticing aromas of black cherry, red plum and spiced earth effortlessly plume out of the glass. On the palate, there is a wonderful sour-cherry concentration with notes of almond wrapped in juicy tannins and a delicate, gleaming acidity. While this Valpolicella isn't full-bodied, there is a nice weight to the wine which gives it an extra density and structure that is beautifully balanced with the wine's energy. The finish is long and refreshing, enticing you back to the glass for more. A beautiful wine that speaks to the quality and appeal that the gorgeous wines of the Classico zone can achieve. This is an excellent food wine that will pair with a wide range of dishes from Venetian-style risotto to fatty fish like sablefish or tuna to sausage-based pasta dishes. |
