In my opinion, the best kept secret in the world of white Burgundy is Pernand-Vergelesses, the charming village located just above the famous hill of Corton. Atop this hill (and partially located in Pernand-Vergelesses), lies the Grand Cru vineyard Corton-Charlemagne, which makes some of the greatest Chardonnay in the world. Just to the north are the vineyards of Pernand-Vergelesses — the northernmost in the Côte de Beaune — which create intense, mineral-driven wines that age beautifully and drink with an energy and structure reminiscent of its Grand Cru neighbor. The top producer here is my good friend Christine Gruère-Dubreuil of Domaine Dubreuil-Fontaine, whose wines are well-known throughout Burgundy and to our customers here at the Princeton Corkscrew. The fabulous 2019 vintage has just arrived in the shop, and Christine has done a superb job harnessing the ripeness of the year while maintining vigor and zeal. | 143 Years and Still Going Strong  Domaine Dubreuil-Fontaine was established in 1879; five generations later, it is managed by Christine Gruère-Dubreuil and her husband, Nicolas Gruère. Superb winemaking tradition and an intense love of their land has enabled the estate to rise to epic status, using the family motto, “Pleasure and passion carry on…” as a guideline for success. This family has spent nearly a century and a half chasing perfection, and that fact is beautifully evident in each new vintage from this unforgettable estate. Dubreuil-Fontaine is one of our flagship Burgundy producers, but Christine, Nicolas and their daughter, Clementine (who has officially joined her mother in the vineyards and cellar), are also like family to me. Six summers ago, Clementine spent a few weeks living with me and my family in order to learn and practice her English for university. I have to say that I was a little nervous during her visit, since she is the same age as my twin boys! However my fears were unfounded, as they became fast friends and stay in touch to this day. |
Beautifully Balanced  Dubreuil-Fontaine's 2019 Pernand-Vergelesses Blanc is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes that were fermented in 50% oak barrels and 50% stainless steel tanks. After fermentation, the wine is aged for 10-12 months in 50% French oak barrles (10% of which are new) and 50% stainless steel. This combination of oak and stainless steel fermentaiton and aging imparts an exciting balance of richness and energy into the wine, making it a pleasure to drink now, though also giving it enough depth to age well. Light gold color in the glass with fresh, light citrus aromas blend with almond, butterscotch and a touch of vanilla. There is a wonderful flinty mineral presence intertwined with pure orchard fruits on the mid-palate. The wine coats your mouth with a smooth, lemon-meringue flavor mixed with a light nuttiness that carries through to a long, savory finish and makes your mouth water for another sip. Beautifully balanced, this is textbook Pernand-Vergelesses, and can be enjoyed now or aged anywhere from 2 - 10 years. It is also extremely versatile with food; perfect with baked cod and vegetables, steamed lobster or a classic roast chicken. |
