When it comes to Left Bank Bordeaux, the four main communes — St-Estèphe, Pauillac, Saint-Julien and Margaux — get the lion's share of recognition and praise. These communes are home to the most celebrated Grand Cru Classé Châteaux: estates that are among the most revered in the world. Yet, nestled between Saint-Julien and Margaux lies Moulis, a region with all the finesse, depth and aging potential offered by the other communes. And since the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation flies under the radar, it is home to some exceptional wines that offer incredible value. In Moulis, the king is Château Poujeaux: their wines are the most celebrated and collected in this often-overlooked region. The wines are excellent candidates for extended cellaring, though they offer so much charm and accessibility that you can drink them now with pleasure. The 2019 Château Poujeaux is one of their best vintages I have tasted in years. This is Grand Cru Bordeaux at a petite price! Do not miss this opportunity to discover the fabulous Château Poujeaux for yourself, I have a feeling it won't be around for long! |
| The Top Château in Moulis The history of Château Poujeaux stretches back to the 1600's, when the Poujeaux lands were a dependent lordship of Latour Saint-Mambert. Over the centuries, the château had many different owners, though the quality of the terroir and its wines were always apparent. In 2008, the Cuvelier family purchased the property and modernized the winemaking facilities along with the estate's farming techniques, moving to organic viticulture with an eye on biodynamic farming. Since then, renowned Bordeaux consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt has helped the Cuvelier family in their quest to produce wines of the highest quality. The estate consists of 68 hectares in Moulis which are planted to 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot on gravel-based soils. Harvest and sorting are done by hand with the vineyard philosophy centered on the ultimate respect to the fruit. It is no wonder that with such effort put into the vineyards and winery that Poujeaux is considered the top estate in Moulis-en-Médoc! |
An Incredible Left Bank Value The 2019 Château Poujeaux is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot; all grapes are whole-berry fermented in stainless steel tanks and concrete, the aged for 12 months in one-third new French oak barrels and two-thirds second and third use barrels. 2019 is an exceptional vintage in Bordeaux, producing wines of great pleasure and structure with freshness and energy. In the glass, Château Poujeaux displays a vibrant garnet color with ruby highlights. The nose is wonderfully expressive with aromas of cassis, strawberries, red cherries, baking spice, milk chocolate, and violets. On the palate, the 2019 Poujeaux shows remarkable balance of ripe tannins and rich, concentrated fruit flavors buoyed by a lively acidity and enticing mineral spine that flow into a persistent finish with the perfect amount of high-quality French oak flavors. This is an exceptional Bordeaux from arguably the top producer in one of region's most underappreciated appellations. Indeed, Poujeaux's wines are some of the best values to be found on the left bank! |
