| | Domaine d'Arbousset Lirac | 2016 Rhône, France 15% ABV | Regular Price: $20 | |
Located in the southern Rhône Valley, Lirac is an appellation that makes some of the best examples of Grenache, usually blended with complementary grapes like Syrah, Mourvèdre and/or Cinsault, which add structure and complexity to the final blend. The grapes are harvested at low-yields and produce wines that are full-bodied, rich and spicy with great concentration. They are excellent representations of sunny, warm-climate viticulture and of the soils of red clay, sand and quartz pebbles in which they are grown. You may say, that sounds a lot like Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the "King of the Rhône" and you wouldn't be wrong, as its reputation of supremacy is hardly a secret. Yet that is where the similarities end. The shamefully overlooked region of Lirac is about one quarter the size of Châteauneuf and lies directly across the Rhône River from its more esteemed neighbor. And even though Lirac produces wines that are just as good as those opposite the river — at a fraction of the price — no one talks about it. Sadly, Lirac has always been in the shadow of the throne, but among fine wine professionals, it remains the Undercover King for its outstanding quality and value. My favorite is from one of our Rockstars of the Rhône, Gérald Lafont. |
| Making History Gérald Lafont is a master oenologist who consults for over 40 different wineries in the Rhône, many of which are prestigious estates that reside in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The amount of time, care and consistency it must take to help all of these vineyards deliver wines of the utmost, supreme quality is difficult to wrap one's mind around. The even more amazing thing is, that's only his part-time job. His focus and true passion lie in Lirac, on a small 2.5 hectare parcel of land that was left to him by his father, Yvon. Yvon worked these same vines and taught a young Gérald about farming and hard work; two lessons he has applied to all his professional work. When I met him almost a decade ago, his true love for wine and what he is accomplishing at his small vineyard in Lirac was apparent in every word. But he didn't need to say much; his wine did most of the talking for him. |
What You've All Been Waiting For The 2016 Domaine d'Arbousset is a blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 5% Cinsault and 5% Mourvèdre. The aromas that waft out of the glass are almost trance-inducing. As I drew in a long, slow breath of this wine I could feel my eyelids half close, as if a relaxant had been added to the wonderfully aromatic nose. It reveals layers of fresh red berries combined with an intriguing herbal and stone fruit mix with a touch of flowers. After one sip, I was hooked. Up front, this wine is enticing and vibrant. On the mid-palate, the berries balance perfectly with a light minerality to coat the mouth with an incredible energy. Finally, the finish is stunning — lengthy, smooth and luscious. The wine is lively, brooding and sexy all in one shot. It is utterly astonishing and the closest thing to Châteauneuf-du-Pape quality wine I've ever tasted without actually being one. Pair with roasted lamb with garlic and rosemary, veal or any barbecued meats. |
