Maranges 1er Cru

Burgundy, France

Wine quality throughout Burgundy has never been better, thanks to a wave of fresh-faced, ambitious young producers — like Florian Regnaudot of Domaine Regnaudot in Maranges...

Florian is a symbol of Burgundy's youth movement. He has traveled and worked internationally in New Zealand, South Africa and Minnesota (yes, Minnesota!), accruing experience and knowledge of grape-growing and winemaking in terroirs both similar, and very different, from his native Burgundy. At the same time, he benefits from several generations of his family's heritage and wisdom. Additionally, Florian is someone who takes great pride in his vineyards, meticulously caring for his vines in the often overlooked, and shamefully under-appreciated, village of Maranges.

This mix of innovation and tradition propels the quality of Domiane Regnaudot's wines into the stratosphere. Three years ago, when we introduced his Maragnes Premier Cru Le Clos des Rois, the wine became a huge hit with customers and staff alike. Many of our Burgundy-loving clientele would pester me with requests for the wine, always asking when are we getting more? I am happy to say that the fabulous 2018 vintage has just arrived in the shop! I feel "Grand" about this Premier Cru: the wine is regal, majestic and totally off the charts — a wine whose quality well surpasses its origin! I am thrilled to share with you one of Burgundy's next-generation superstars and his long-awaited Premier Cru from Burgundy's royal plot.

The Vineyard of Kings
Domaine Regnaudot consists of seven hectares of vineyards primarily in Maranges, the southernmost village in the Côte d'Or. Florian took over the domaine from his father, Bernard, in 2014, and since has become one of the most exciting talents in Burgundy. His domaine is blessed with an abundance of old vines, which Florian tends to with the utmost care and respect. His most prized Pinot Noir comes from Le Clos des Rois Premier Cru in two different plots: one planted in 1978, the other in 1933! Le Clos des Rois — one of seven Premier Cru vineyards in Maranges — is subdivided into small collections of vines by banks of piled stones called murgers. Maranges is derived from murgers in the local dialect and this is from which the name of the appellation comes. Florian's passion and pride in the region, its vineyards and its wines is so strong, that he is the Vice-President of Le Organisation de Défense et de Gestion de l'appellation Maranges, a group of vignerons in the village that promote their special terroir.

A Wine That Doesn't Quit
The average age of the Pinot Noir vines in Le Clos des Rois is just under 62 years old and the old-vine concentration and finesse comes across brilliantly in this wine. It displays a beautiful light cherry color with garnet highlights. When you first swirl the wine, the aromas permeate the air before you even get your nose in the glass. Enchanting aromatics of cherry, plum, strawberry and dried flowers dance with an enticing duo of earthiness and a stony minerality, all tied together by a subtle spice note. The palate is harmonious and impeccably balanced with ripe tannins framing an abundance of concentrated dark fruits that are buoyed by an uplifting acidity. The finish is long and persistent, showing a fabulous interplay of fruit, minerality and savory herbs and spice that goes on forever: this is a wine that just won't quit. And this is just the first sip! After time in the glass and bottle, the wine blossoms and opens even more to reveal incredible depth of flavor and complexity. This is truly a wine for kings, one that illustrates how an ambitious, next-generation winemaker can not only carry the torch, but make it burn even brighter than before.
