No, this is not an April Fool's Joke: I really am featuring a no sulfur-added red wine, from Provence, made with a grape you've probably never heard of, Marselan. The reasons are simple: one, it's a delicious red wine that speaks of the high-altitude, Provençal vineyards from where it grows, two, it's made by a family of hard-working farmers who put their heart and soul into every bottle they produce and last, but certainly not least, it delivers spectacular quality at a great value. The d'Herbé family has been living around the historic city of Manosque in the Alpes de Haute Provence since the mid-1700's and making wine since the late 1800's. From their certified organic vineyards, Saint Jean lez Durance produces this gorgeous Marselan that delivers alpine panache with Provençal savoir faire: sunshine in a glass, purity of fruit and a soft, succulent mouthfeel — the perfect red to welcome spring! |
| The Oldest Estate in Pierrevert Château Saint-Jean-Lez-Durance has been producing wine since 1880, making it the oldest estate in Pierrevert. The d'Herbè family has owned their land since 1754, when it was a polyculture farm before Henri d'Herbe converted the land to vineyards. Today, Jean-Guillaume d'Herbè is the fifth generation to the lead the estate, which is now certified organic and utilizes biodynamic practices in the vineyards. Jean-Guillaume's grandfather, Jean, was instrumental in expanding the area under vine, as well as detailing the terroir for what would ultimately become Pierrevert. The vineyards are spread out over almost 33 hectares on hillsides of clay-limestone and terraces of gravel and silt located between the Luberon Mountains and the Durance River. |
No Sulfur-Added The Cuvée Saint Gérard celebrates Gérard Tenque, founder of the Order of Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem, whose relics were kept in the famous commandery of Manosque during the Middle Ages. Made from 100% Marselan — a crossing of Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon — without the addition of sulfur. Deep ruby in color, the wine is aromatically intense with notes of morello cherry, redcurrant and licorice. The palate is soft and broad with tannins that melt in the mouth and added flavors of roasted plums, blueberries and tamarind. The finish is incredibly smooth and easy. Enjoy with artisanal cheeses alongside assorted terrines and pâté. |
