If there is one thing I have learned during my thirty-plus years in the wine business, it is the importance of having a strong network of friends and colleagues — people I trust implicitly and with whom I share similar values, philosophies and vision... I have been extremely fortunate to have developed such relationships throughout the wine world — friends like my Bordeaux courtier Guillaume, or Ines, "my eyes and ears" in Spain — whose advice and recommendations I hold in the highest regard. Another such person is my long-time friend, Christophe, who not only runs a winery, but perhaps more importantly, is the owner of a vine nursery. For years, Christophe has specialized in cultivating and selling top vine clones to some of the best vineyards and estates throughout France and Germany, giving him intimate knowledge of the desires and goals of each owner and vineyard manager with whom he works. And as someone who has an intuitive understanding of the authentic terroir wines I wish to bring to my customers, Christophe has never let me down with any of his recommendations. So, when he suggested I visit Domaine Quintin Frères, an estate in the Loire Valley which he just replanted with some of his best quality clones, I did not hesitate set up a meeting with the two brothers who owned the property. I will forever be indebted to Christophe for leading me to one of my greatest Loire discoveries that I have brought to the shop... |
| Rising Stars I met with the Quintin brothers, François and Michel, at their ten-hectare property in Coteaux du Giennois, just a stone's throw away from Sancerre. True farmers in every sense of the word, they walked me through their beautifully tended vineyards, where I saw firsthand their dedication to vine and nature. When the brothers began their winemaking endeavor in 1991, they enlisted the services of Christophe to replant their Rive Droite (Right Bank) parcel. This plot of clay and limestone soil had lain dormant since the Phylloxera blight of the late 19th century. In the three decades since, it has blossomed into the renown Domaine Quintin Frères. It is not common to see such a young estate rise as quickly through the ranks as Domaine Quintin has, accumulating medals and accolades that are almost as impressive as the wine itself! |
The Brothers Quintin Domaine Quintin's 2020 Rive Droite is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc that pours a light gold color with green highlights. The wine is incredibly expressive, displaying gorgeous aromas of ripe citrus and tropical fruits. On the palate, this Loire white is fresh and racy with flavors of peach, kiwi and pineapple. The Quintin brothers do a superb job of balancing fruit and acidity to create a seamless drinking experience. This is the ultimate bistro wine! Pair with an arugula salad served with seared scallops or grilled asparagus drizzled with fresh lemon juice and olive oil and topped with goat cheese. |
