Since its introduction over two years ago, the Paloma de Plata Albariño has been one of our most popular white wines not only from Spain, but in the entire shop. Whenever we receive our shipment, it is usually gone within a month, if not sooner. The lively aromatics, fresh fruit and herbal flavors — perfectly balanced by an energetic mineral core — combine to make a wine of supreme drinkability, as well as remarkable versatility on the table. It's amazing how far Albariño has come, from an obscure Galician varietal to the signature white grape of Spain. In 1987, Rías Baixas — the appellation home to Albariño — had only 237 hectares of vineyards planted; in 2012, that area had ballooned to 4,050 hectares, a direct result of the quality and popularity of Albariño. Portugal, California, Oregon, Washington, Australia, New Zealand and Uruguay all have plantings, and, since 2010, it has even been allowed in France! While international examples can be delicious, it is at its best from Spain, specifically in Rías Baixas, where Albariño makes some of the most expressive, distinctive and utterly delicious white wines in the world.
