| | Little Frances Merlot | 2019 Mendocino, California 14% ABV | Regular Price: $29 | |
Merlot is, always has been and always will be one of the great, noble wine grapes of the world... It is the most planted grape in Bordeaux, with appellations like Saint-Émilion and Pomerol producing magnificent examples that are among the world’s best wines. Yet, there remains a stigma around Merlot, especially in California. However, there is a wave of exciting young vignerons who have been singing the praises of Merlot, winemakers like Erin Pooley who produces a stunning example under her Little Frances label. Erin and I are of the same mind: We want people to appreciate the complexity, richness and depth of Merlot. Even though Erin's focus is on white varietals, she has a deft touch with this red grape (the only red wine she makes), and when I tasted her 2019 Mendocino Merlot, I knew I had found a California wine worth getting excited about: it is the best California Merlot I have tasted in years! Erin has crafted a wine that highlights the ripeness of fruit, lush texture and nuanced flavors of what this grape can achieve in California. If you've ever wondered what great Golden State Merlot tastes like, look no further than Erin's Little Frances. Here is her story... |
| Australia to California Little Frances is the project of Erin Frances Pooley (aka Little Frances), who was born and raised in Sydney, Australia. Though, since 2007, she has been making wine around the world. Armed with a degree in Wine Science from Charles Sturt University in Australia, Erin arrived in California in 2012 and founded her own label, Little Frances, focusing on making age-worthy white and red wines. Her first wine was a Sémillon from the high-altitude Luchsinger Vineyard in Lake County, California, which she released with several years of bottle age. Since, Erin has expanded her portfolio to include Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot, all sourced from vineyards in northern California. She focuses primarily on white varietals, though her approach to Merlot is to craft a red wine through a white winemaker's lens. Erin's results are outstanding. |
Merlot's Day in the Sun Little Frances' 2019 Merlot is sourced from the Mohawk Hill Vineyard in the Redwood Valley AVA of Mendocino County, California, farmed by multi-generational farmer, Rick Dutra. The sun-kissed vineyard is located on the western edge of the Russian River Valley at 200 meters above sea level on well-draining iron-rich soils and is in the process of conversion to organic farming. In the glass, the wine displays a mid-purple color with brilliant ruby reflections. The nose is fabulously expressive with complex aromas of ripe plum, black raspberry, lead pencil, red flowers, clove and chili pepper. On the palate, the wine shows a restrained power complemented by a soft, lush texture and bright acidity alongside great concentration of ripe fruit flavors and complex mineral notes. The finish is refreshing and intriguing, offering added flavors of muddled cherries, clove and graphite which bring you back to the glass for more. You can drink now, though don't be afraid to squirrel away a few bottles — I believe this will drink wonderfully over the next 5-8 years. Enjoy with pork braised with chilis, steak in a red wine sauce or grilled sausages. |
