To say Bodegas Valdelana is an impressive producer in Rioja is an understatement. Juan Jesús Valdelana, current proprietor of the estate, farms some of the most renowned vineyards in this historic region. In October of 2019, the Valdelana family received a certificate of authenticity from Spain's Minister of Agriculture confirming Bodegas Valdelana as the winery with the most Viñedos Singulares in Rioja! Viñedos Singulares is a new classification in the region, which has identified the top Grand Cru vineyards by a strict set of criteria including vine age, soil type, yield, manual farming and ownership. Juan Valdelana owns and farms vines in 10 different Viñedos Singulares, more than anyone in Rioja! It is this magical terroir, combined with great farming and traditional winemaking, that goes into each and every bottle from Bodegas Valdelana. I have just received the 2018 Báron Ladrón de Guevara Rioja Crianza, which showcases the family's unwavering dedication to produce wines of supreme quality and value. When I tasted the wine, I couldn't believe how much concentration, complexity and refreshment it delivered: At this price, it is the best value in Rioja I've taste from the 2018 vintage! It never fails to amaze me that regardless of vintage, the Valdelana family consistently makes stunning wines from Spain's most historic appellation. |
| A History of Excellence Bodegas Valdelana is located in Elciego, known as the noble birthplace of Rioja Álavesa wines. The 150-hectare estate sits between the Ebro River and the Sierra de Cantabria mountains. This location lends itself to such delicious fruit because their chalk and clay-laden vineyards face southeast, toward the cooling Ebro, which allows for optimum sun exposure and ensures perfect ripening of the grapes. The mountains offer protection from the gusting northerly winds. The Valdelana family has been tending these vines since well before the estate was founded in the late 19th century. Juan Jesús, thirteenth-generation owner and current winemaker, is one of the most innovative vignerons in all of Spain. He has worked tirelessly to transform the property not only into a first-class Rioja estate, but also a center of learning. Juan has established a museum showcasing the history of winemaking, which includes a journey through all the senses involved in wine tasting. Today, his children, Juan and Judit, are the 14th generation of the family to work at the winery, ensuring the continued legacy, traditions and values of Bodegas Valdelana. |
Rioja Crianza Bodegas Valdelana's Barón Ladrón de Guevara Crianza is a blend of 95% Tempranillo and 5% Mazuelo, the region's name for Carignan. It is a beautiful, bright ruby-red in the glass with wonderful aromas of red cherry, mulberry, graphite and light vanilla. It spends 12 months in cask (50% French oak and 50% American oak), which provides this medium-bodied wine with a very soft and smooth mouthfeel. It dazzles the palate with fantastic ripe raspberry and red licorice flavors balanced with the unique minerality of their terrr in Rioja. There is a light note of spice and oak on the sumptuous finish. Pair this wine with Manchego cheese, chicken and chorizo with rice or lamb prepared any way you desire. |
