| | ValSotillo Finca Buenavista | 2018 Ribera del Duero, Spain 14.5% ABV | Regular Price: $19 | |
Finally, after 9 months of waiting, ValSotillo's Finca Buenavista is back! Always one of the most popular red wines in the shop, the 2018 vintage has just arrived and the wine is stellar! This is a traditional, textbook Ribera del Duero: Rich, lush, and full-bodied, brimming with decadent fruit concentration and a complex savory undertone. To get this much wine from one of Spain's most prestigious appellations is an off the charts value! Though, it shouldn't be much of a surprise that Ismael Arroyo and his family (proprietors of ValSotillo) produce such an amazing wine. Back in 1982, when the Ribera del Duero D.O (Spanish appellation) was founded, ValSotillo was one of only nine Bodegas in the region. Ismael established ValSotillo in 1979, however, his family has been passing down the accumulated knowledge about their vineyards and cellars from generation to generation since the 16th century! He was instrumental in writing the laws for what became Ribera del Duero, and in the process, became a founding father of one of Spain's most prestigious appellations, one that produces some of the most expensive and collectible wines in all of Spain. Today, ValSotillo continues to be a leading reference of quality as one of the top artisanal producers in the region. Do not miss this opportunity to enjoy the gorgeous 2018 vintage of the ValSotillo Finca Buenavista from the man who literally wrote the book on Ribera del Duero. |
| A Part of History I was lucky enough to start working with Bodega ValSotillo just over five years ago, when Steph and I went to visit this historic Ribera del Duero estate. While there, we saw their immaculate vineyards in the village of Sotillo de la Ribera, where they have gnarly bush-trained Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) vines, some of which are over 100 years old! In exceptional vintages, it is these grapes that go into their Vendimia Seleccionada (VS) Reserva. We also had the opportunity to visit their cellars, which stretch for over two miles underground! Touring the winery is like stepping back in time, in the best sense of the phrase. The property was once a wine-making village, where each family's home had its own entrance into the caves within the mountain. As I walked through the narrow tunnels, I ran my fingers across the walls and ceiling, feeling the pick marks left when those tunnels were carved out by hand over 400 years ago. It is impossible not be swept away by the majesty and history of the estate, and that feeling is present in every wine that is carefully grown, vinified and aged in these historic vineyards and cellars. |
ValSotillo Finca Buenavista Located in the Burgos region of Ribera del Duero, the vineyards of ValSotillo sit on 25 hectares (over 61 acres). The Tempranillo vines, grown in clay soils, average 40 years of age, many as old as 80 years, some over 100. The Finca Buenavista pours an intense purple color, emitting ripe, lush dark-berry fruit aromas that leap from the glass even before you lift it to your nose. On the palate, this wine is robust and broad with suave, mouth-coating tannins and rich fruit flavor, yet shows incredible elegance and freshness on the mid-palate. The finish is long-lasting and graced with hints of pipe tobacco, spice and plum. The Finca Buenavista is all the more remarkable considering the cool growing conditions of the 2018 vintage in Ribera del Duero; it manages a gorgeous ripeness of fruit with a complementing soft texture while maintaining poise, transparency and vigor. You can enjoy the Finca Buenavista on its own, but it will pair beautifully with grilled lamb, beef or pork. |
