The 2017 Vinum Terra from Vignobles Boissonneau, is indeed the Corkscrew's first natural wine. And this is NOT an April Fool's Day Joke. I discovered this stunning 100% Merlot visiting friends in France. It is a wine I absolutely adore — a home run — and after learning how it was produced, I couldn't believe it: I have never tasted such an immaculate "natural" wine before — it is almost impossible to find! Though, natural it is... Organic farming, check... No added yeasts, acid, sugar or sulfur, check... No heavy-handed manipulation of the wine, check... No new oak barrels, check... So, what is it doing at the Princeton Corkscrew wine shop? The simple answer is that it is a delicious red Bordeaux that speaks truthfully to its terroir, is made by a family of hard-working farmers who put their heart and soul into every bottle that they produce and delivers spectacular quality at a great value. | Vignobles Boissonneau  The Boissonneau family has been making wine since 1839, primarily in Bordeaux, though also in the Côtes de Marmandais. Today, the sixth generation of family members run the estate, led by Pascal Boissonneau who runs the vineyards (with the help of his Uncle Philippe) and the winery. Since 2007, the family has been practicing organic farming, and in 2016, all of their 72 acres, in Bordeaux and the Southwest, are certified organic. In addition to making organic wines, the Boissonneau family is committed to protecting the biodiversity of their vineyards with innovative techniques, like the use of specific grasses and the installation of beehives. Within the past few years, the family has also started utilizing biodynamic practices in the vineyards and cellar. |
Natural Bordeaux  Vinum Terra is made from 100% Merlot. All grapes are grown organically (with some biodynamic practices), no sulfur is added to the must or wine at any point, and there are absolutely zero additions to the grapes, must or wine. And yet, after tasting the wine, you'd be hard pressed to describe it as "natural". What do I mean by that? Well, first of all, the wine pours a clear, brilliant purple color: there is no cloudy haze or small particles floating in the glass. Second, the nose is pristine: clean and fresh with seductive aromas of ripe plum, cassis and blackberry mixed with spice and a touch of earth. Third, the palate is well-rounded with soft, mouth-coating tannins and an integrated acidity that sublimely frames the ripe fruit concentration and balances perfectly with the agile, lively finish. There are no funky or sour flavors, no sharp edges, faults or imperfections; it is a complete wine that fits the definition of natural by pretty much every measure. In addition to the wine being organic, all packaging material, labels, boxes are certified Imprimvert, meaning they contribute to the sustainable development of the planet.
