In the 1970’s, Luca De Marchi’s father, Paolo, moved his family to Tuscany to found the renown Isole e Olena estate. Yet, he always dreamed he would eventually return to the family’s roots in northern Piedmont. After playing a major role spawning the rebirth of Chianti Classico, Paolo sought to realize that dream, and in 1999, he and Luca returned to Lessona and took the reins of their historic family estate. The Sperino castle and property had lain dormant for over three decades and the vineyards had been overrun by the surrounding forest. Luca and Paolo cleared the trees and replanted the vineyards, and in 2004 — after a laborious reconstruction — they released their first vintage.
Today, Luca is proprietor and winemaker of Proprieta Sperino, which now consists of eight hectares nestled in the foothills of Monte Rosa. Luca’s goal is to obtain the highest quality wines in full respect to the tradition of Lessona. Here, the climatic peculiarities, combined with the unique, bright yellow silty/sandy soils, instill the Nebbiolo grape with one-of-a-kind, qualitative characteristics — characteristics that have made Luca’s wines exceedingly popular here at the shop.
Please circle April 25, 2026 on your calendars for when we welcome back Luca De Marchi to the Princeton Corkscrew Wine Shop for a very special Saturday afternoon tasting. Luca will be on hand all afternoon long as we taste three of his exquisite wines. Be sure to tell your friends about this not-to-be-missed tasting! We hope to see you here…
